Villa Collemandina
History (continued)
During the Renaissance, Villa Collemandina experienced a strong economic development thanks to the presence of the marble quarries of Corfino and its position on the trade route between Lucca and Reggio Emilia. In the eighteenth century, it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and lost its economic importance, becoming a center of agriculture and livestock.
During World War II, it suffered several bombings, but thanks to the partisan resistance, the village was not occupied by Nazi troops. From the post-war period to today, Villa Collemandina has experienced a slow economic recovery, mainly due to tourism related to the natural beauties of the territory.
Monuments and places of interest
Among the historical monuments in the municipal area, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta stands out, dating back to the fourteenth century and restored in the eighteenth century. Moreover, worth a visit are the churches of San Rocco, located in the hamlet of Canigiano, and San Giovanni Battista in Magnano. The village of Corfino, located at about 800 m above sea level, is one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany, with its stone houses and a small castle. Also noteworthy are the Romanesque bridges over the Corfino stream, which are located along the road that leads from the village of Villa Collemandina to Canigiano.
Economy and culture
Agriculture and livestock farming are still among the main economic activities in the municipal area; the production of chestnuts and sheep's milk cheese are particularly popular. Furthermore, tourism has recently been encouraged, thanks to the beauty of natural landscapes and the presence of numerous hiking trails. Villa Collemandina also hosts the Garfagnino Territory Museum, which collects objects and testimonies related to daily life and traditions of the area.

Moreover, there are tennis, football and bowls courts, as well as a playground for children.
