History

Founded in the twelfth century, Vignale Monferrato has had a tumultuous past due to the Monferrato succession wars, which brought destruction and death over the centuries. In 1703, when it became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia under the House of Savoy, the town finally found political and social stability.

Monuments and Places of Interest

The Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo is a perfect example of Baroque architecture, with its monumental façade, impressive classicism pronaos, and Luigi Morgari frescoes inside. The fifteenth-century Church of the Beata Vergine Addolorata is another magnificent church worth visiting.

Palazzo Callori, built in the fifteenth century and expanded in the eighteenth century, houses the Regional Enoteca of Monferrato and is open to visitors as part of the "Castelli Aperti" circuit of the Lower Piedmont.

Society

The population of Vignale Monferrato has drastically decreased over the years, from around 3000 inhabitants in 1911 to less than 1000 today. However, the city has recently seen an interesting growth of Colombian origin population, thanks to family ties and the presence of the parish priest of the Church of San Bartolomeo.

Culture

The Vignale Monferrato Festival has taken the place of "Vignale Danza," a famous summer event that saw the participation of the world's best dance companies. The event offers live music, open-air cinema, storytelling, and live performances.

Infrastructure and Transport

Vignale Monferrato has a railway station that was closed in 1935, but it is still possible to reach the city by bus. Thanks to its location on the hills of Monferrato, Vignale also offers many tourist routes for hikers and cyclists.
