Foundation

Turin was founded in the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, a Celtic people who inhabited the area. The city was located in the plain between the rivers Stura, Sangone and Po, and facing the mountains, which offered excellent protection.

In the 11th century, it passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy and in 1563 became its capital. In the 18th century, Turin became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which in the 19th century would lead to the Risorgimento and make Turin the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy.

Economy

Turin is an important center of the automotive industry, publishing, information technology, food and wine, space sector (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence. The city is home to important companies such as FIAT, CNH Industrial, Lavazza, Reale Mutua, Intesa Sanpaolo, and many others.

University

Turin is also an important university center, with numerous universities and research institutes offering a wide range of study programs.

Art and culture

The city has a rich artistic and cultural history, with numerous museums, art galleries, and monuments. Turin has been the venue for important international exhibitions, such as the 1911 International Exhibition and the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006. In 2021 it hosted the ATP Finals and in 2022 the Eurovision Song Contest.

Turin is located in the plain delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po rivers. The city is located in front of the opening of some Alpine valleys, such as the Val di Susa, the Valli di Lanzo, and the Val Sangone.

Tourist destination

The surrounding area is characterized by hilly landscapes, lakes, and natural parks, making it a popular tourist destination. Moreover, there are numerous palaces and areas in the city which are part of the circuit of Savoy Residences in Piedmont, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Transportation

Turin is well connected to other Italian and European cities via the Turin-Caselle airport, the railway network, and the motorway network.
