Vairano

Vairano, a village steeped in history

Hello friends, today I'll talk to you about Vairano, a hamlet in the municipality of Vidigulfo, located southeast of the town towards Gattinara. This small village has an ancient and interesting history, and was an autonomous municipality until 1872.

Vairano was named "Vairano Pavese" in 1864 to distinguish it from other places with the same name, but after the loss of its autonomy, this name fell into disuse. Today, near Vairano, you can find the Vairano Circuit, a historic test track of the "Quattroruote" magazine.

The history of Vairano

Vairano is a small village of ancient origin in the Province of Milan, although it was long contested with Pavia in the Middle Ages. In the 1751 census, the village recorded the presence of 211 residents.

The current position of Vairano in the province of Pavia is the result of the Enlightenment reforms of the Austrian government. The first decree in this regard was issued by Emperor Joseph II in 1786 but was revoked five years later. The measure became definitive in 1815, coinciding with the proclamation of the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom.

Over time, the village has recorded a fair demographic growth for an agricultural village, reaching a peak of 460 inhabitants in 1853, which reduced to 441 in 1861. After the arrival of the House of Savoy, the village went into crisis, decreasing to 428 residents in 1871, and so the municipality was definitively suppressed on 1 November 1872, by decree of Victor Emmanuel II, being annexed to Vidigulfo.
