History

Vicovaro has a very ancient history, dating back to prehistoric times. Here remains from the Neolithic period - late Bronze Age have been found. In the past, human settlement in the area suffered numerous attacks, including those by the Lombards in 589 and 593 and the Saracens in 877. In the twelfth century, after the invasions ended, a modest village, called "Vico Varie", was formed on the ruins of the abandoned area. In 1191, Celestine III donated the village to the Orsini family, nobles who fortified and expanded it, making it the true antemurale of Rome. Over the centuries, Vicovaro has resisted numerous attacks, including those by Valentino in 1503 and the Duke of Alba viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples in 1556. The Orsini dominion ended in 1672. In 1577, it was taken by the Colonna family, but then recovered by the Pope. In the eighteenth century, the village was called "Vicus Varronis", "Vicus Vari" or "Vicus Valerius".

Religious architecture

The beauty of Vicovaro is mainly due to its monuments and religious architecture. In particular, it is worth visiting the temple of San Giacomo, designed by Count Giovanni Antonio Orsini, feudal lord of Vicovaro and Count of Tagliacozzo. The temple, octagonal in shape, stands in front of the Church of San Pietro and has a low area, created by Domenico da Capodistria, occupied by a portal divided into 24 niches with pediments, pinnacles, small columns, etc. The upper area, instead, was created by Giovanni Dalmatian and his school. Inside it is the canvas of the "Madonna di Vicovaro" (1738), a work by the Roman painter Giacomo Triga (1674-1746). The Church of San Pietro, designed by the Roman architect Girolamo Theodoli, has a Greek cross plan and some paintings on canvas by Salvatore Monosilio, while outside there are two other paintings on the facades, one located in front of Palazzo Bolognetti and the other next to the Chapel of San Giacomo.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Vicovaro is a municipality that offers a lot to tourists who decide to visit it. Its history, natural beauty and monuments that it preserves leave you speechless. If you are looking for a unique and charming tourist destination, then do not hesitate to visit Vicovaro, you will not regret it!
