Uliveto Terme

Discovering Uliveto Terme: a historic destination

Welcome to Uliveto Terme, a beautiful hamlet of the municipality of Vicopisano, located in the province of Pisa, in Tuscany. This small town was created in the alluvial triangle of land delimited to the south by the Arno River and to the north by the White Mountains, the southernmost extension of the Pisan Mountains.

Thermal baths

Uliveto is renowned for its famous thermal spring of Carbon-Alkalinity-Ferrous water, which allowed the development of the thriving Uliveto water industry. The eastern area of Uliveto has always been famous for its thermal springs, used since the Middle Ages for the treatment of skin diseases, primarily Scabies.

The modern thermal establishment focuses exclusively on hydrotherapy treatments, as baths were used until the last century. The water emerges from the subsoil with a temperature between 22 and 36 degrees and its consumption is recommended for those suffering from liver, kidney and gastrointestinal disorders.

The thermal park of Uliveto Terme, immersed in the green of its spacious garden, offers ample possibilities for relaxation thanks to the presence of a swimming pool and two tennis courts. In addition, the medical and sports convention center is very popular.

Caves and caverns

The mountainous area of Uliveto is composed of numerous caves and caverns that have been explored and studied over the years, and in some of which many Ulivetesi took refuge during the bombings of World War II in 1944.

Despite this speleological heritage being known for centuries and extensively explored and studied, its valorization has not yet reached the interest of local authorities or the population, to the benefit of the thermal activities that are closely related.

Numerous caves and caverns can be identified in series, the latter created by pre-existing caves, collapsed following water infiltrations. The Speleological Group of Pisa has explored and drawn some of the local sites, such as the Grotta del Pippi, Il Rotto, La Vigna, In Badia, articulated in different areas such as Buca Sopra la Badia, Grotta della Bucaccia, Spaccatura della Badia, Grotta dell'Uomo di Bronzo and Buca della Volpe, and Caverna de Le Crepe.

Conclusion

Uliveto Terme is a wonderful historic destination, where nature and human activity blend perfectly. Its thermal waters have been used for centuries to help cure many illnesses, making them famous throughout Tuscany. Although there is still much to discover in this hilly area of the province of Pisa, with its caves and hidden wonders in its depths, Uliveto Terme is a place worth visiting to rediscover peace and serenity, immersing oneself in the lush nature of the Tuscan countryside.
