History of Vicopisano

Vicopisano is situated on a hill that was once bordered by rivers and navigable canals like the Arno and the Serchio. Thanks to its strategic location, the settlement became a "castellum," or fortified settlement, already in the 10th century. Over the centuries, Vicopisano became one of the most significant military strongholds in the Pisa area.

The Origins of Vicopisano

The hill and the surrounding area may have already been inhabited in the Etruscan era, as evidenced by the ceramic artifacts dating back to the 5th century BC. There are a few traces of the Lombard domination found in the area, but some place names suggest their presence in the area. The castle of Vico, whose name derives from "Sala," echoing in the name of the primitive castle of Vico, was first mentioned in documents in 934 as "Vicus" and in 975 as a castle of "Oserrinsula/Auserissala."

The Fusion of Two Centers

The fusion of the two centers, evidently very close, was born at the dawn of the year 1000, the "Vicus Auserissola," which then later became known as Vico Pisano. The fortress of Oserinsula/Auserissala has been attributed to the initiative of members of an important feudal family, the Obertenghi, but they began to disband their possessions in the area at the end of the 10th century, giving up goods and rights connected to the castle of Auserissala to the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo in Marturi.
