The history of Viagrande
The first historical sources related to Viagrande date back to 1124 when the villages of Villalori and Vilardi (now Viscalori and Velardi) were built. The two communities merged along an important road that led to the sea passing through the centers of Aci Sant'Antonio, Aci Catena, and Acireale. In 1574, Viagrande's mother church was built, dedicated to Odigitria. In the 15th century, Viagrande also had a Benedictine monastery called Santa Maria della Cava. In the 19th century, Viagrande actively participated in the Risorgimento cause and was also involved in Garibaldi's Expedition of the Thousand. From the brigands to the fight for Italian unity, the history of Viagrande has been marked by many events.
