Vezza d'Oglio
Welcome to Vezza d'Oglio
Hello everyone! I will tell you a bit about Vezza d'Oglio, a town in the Val Camonica, Lombardy. With its 1466 inhabitants, Vezza d'Oglio is a small gem in the province of Brescia, located on the right bank of the river Oglio and along the state road 42 of the Tonale and Mendola, which in the stretch that crosses the village is called Via Nazionale.
Let's discover the territory
The territory of Vezza mainly consists of three lateral valleys of the Val Camonica: Val Grande, Val Paghera, and Val Bighera. In addition to these, some higher altitude areas such as Passo di Pietra Rossa, a small part of Aviolo, and Cima Rovaia are also included in the municipal territory. The village is crossed by the Val Grande stream, which flows into the Oglio river. The municipality is also crossed by other rivers besides Oglio and Val Grande: Val Paghera and Val Bighera.

The name and history
Would you like to know where the name Vezza d'Oglio comes from? Legend has it that a flood destroyed the ancient settlement of Rosolina, on the debris of which the current Vezza was born. "Èsa" means "barrel," and it was precisely this object that was found in the place of the natural disaster; a barrel full of oil that gave rise to the name. The dialectal translation of the name (Éza) means "barrel." In the municipal territory, there are traces of prehistoric settlements, particularly in the rock carvings of "Sass de la stria," literally "the witch's rock." It is so-called because it bears engravings of tools that the inhabitants remembered the work of witches, who supposedly held their rituals at the Tonale pass, a few kilometers away from the village. In Roman times, the Roman Civilization conquered the Val Camonica. They began to dig white marble from the "Borom" quarry, upstream of the settlement, and used this stone for some works in the city of "Civitas Camunorum" (now Cividate Camuno). After the passage of the Franks of Charlemagne, in 774, many properties in the valley were donated to the monastery of Tours. In 1047, Vezza obtained the faculty to have its own baptismal font, without having to refer to the one in the parish church of Edolo. In 1315, the vicinia of Vezza usurped some property belonging to the hospital of Edolo. The case lasted until 1330, when Pasolino da Berzo, the new parish priest of Edolo, regained possession of the property.
