History

The name Vetralla comes from the Latin "Vetus aula" or "Vetus alia". Thanks to its dominant and easily fortifiable position, Vetralla has been continuously occupied since the High Middle Ages. During the Roman era, there was a post station on the Cassia road about two km from the medieval settlements. In the late empire, the population moved to the current, more easily defendable position. Vetralla was long contested between the Popes and the lords of Viterbo. In 1145, Pope Eugene III installed himself in Vetralla to escape the violence and internal struggles of Rome. From here he proclaimed the Second Crusade with the papal bull Quantum praedecessores. During World War II, Vetralla was the third largest concentration camp in Italy.
