Vigne

Welcome to Vigne, the hamlet of Verzino!

Hello friends, today I will talk to you about a small hamlet in the heart of Calabria: Vigne. Are you ready to discover the history and beauty of this corner of paradise?

History

As I mentioned, Vigne has ancient origins, dating back to the 4th century BC when the Romans founded it with the name of "Vainim". Over the centuries, the hamlet has undergone many changes: after the fall of the Roman Empire, it passed under the control of the Byzantines and, later, the Normans. In the Middle Ages, Vigne was part of the feud of Santa Severina, which later passed under the control of the Carafa family. With the unification of Italy, Vigne became a hamlet of the municipality of Verzino.

If you are passionate about history and culture, Vigne is the ideal place for you. The hamlet preserves many remains from the Roman era, including the ruins of the ancient city walls, the remains of a necropolis, and a temple dedicated to the goddess Diana. I also recommend visiting the old church of San Giacomo, dating back to the 17th century, and the Norman Tower, a majestic building from the 9th century that served to defend the city from Saracen raids.

Local cuisine

In addition to its history, Vigne is also famous for its culinary tradition. Calabrian cuisine is one of the tastiest in Italy and here in Vigne, you can taste typical dishes such as "nduja" (a spicy sausage), "tarantella" (a dish based on potatoes and peppers), and "pitta 'mpigliata" (a sweet based on honey and walnuts). Moreover, you can taste the excellent wine produced by the vineyards that surround the city.

Events and festivals

If you decide to visit Vigne in the summer, don't miss the famous festival of San Giacomo, the patron saint of the city, celebrated on July 25th. During the festival, the streets of the city are animated by music, dances, and fireworks shows. Also, every year the famous tomato festival is held, where you can taste gastronomic excellences of the area.
