Welcome to the Province of Crotone

If you're curious to discover a new place in Italy, the province of Crotone could be your next destination. With its 160,000 inhabitants and an area of 1,716 km², the province stretches along the east coast of Calabria. It borders the province of Cosenza to the northwest and the province of Catanzaro to the southwest. Today we would like to tell you a little about the history of this province, its symbols and its geographical location, as well as the Arbëreshë Community present in it.

History

The province of Crotone was born relatively recently, in 1992. However, the proposal for a new province, with its capital in Crotone, was already put forward in 1957. The request, however, remained unanswered until 1989, when twenty-seven mayors of the area fought again for the establishment of a separate entity from the province of Catanzaro. Only in 1992 was the request finally heard and the province of Crotone was officially born. Despite its young age, the province can boast a long history dating back to its existence as part of Magna Graecia.

Physical geography

The province of Crotone is located in the eastern part of Calabria, along the Ionian Sea coast, between the Sila Mountains. Among its most famous tourist destinations we find Le Castella in Isola di Capo Rizzuto, where the famous castle built on an island in the middle of the sea stands, Punta Alice which receives the Blue Flag every year for its clean sea, and Capo Colonna, which is an unforgettable cultural destination. Those who prefer the mountains can visit Trepidò in Cotronei to see the Villaggio Palumbo and the Villaggio Pino Grande, which are located in the Sila. In the same area there are also the mountains Monte Giove, Monte Femminamorta and part of Monte Gariglione, which are important for biodiversity. Villaggio Fratta and Villaggio Principe are also worth a visit.

The Arbëreshë community

Finally, we want to talk about the Arbëreshë community. This small Albanian community is mainly located in the municipalities of Pallagorio, San Nicola dell'Alto and Carfizzi and represents an important part of the local culture and language. The inhabitants speak the Arbëreshë dialect, which derives from Albanian, and bilingualism is legally required in public institutions.

Overall, the province of Crotone represents a wonderful place to spend your holidays, immersed in the nature and history of Italy. If you don't already know this piece of land, don't hesitate to visit it!
