Verretto has only 376 inhabitants and is located in the province of Pavia, in the Oltrepò Pavese plain, on the left of Coppa, a stream that runs through the area.
History: a Carolingian court
The Verretto region has an interesting history dating back to the Carolingian court of "Ceresola," where there was also a church dedicated to Saint Ambrose. In 1250, in an estimate of the Pavia area territory, the place "Cirixola cum Verreto" was mentioned, but later only Verretto was cited. In the 14th century, the territory belonged to Fiorello Beccaria and his descendants, also known as "Beccaria di Verretto." Verretto was part of the squad or fief of Montebello della Battaglia and always followed the fate of the Beccaria, of the Montebello branch, Orozco, Machado and finally Spinola.
Society: demographic evolution
The population of Verretto has always been very limited. In 1861 there were 374 inhabitants, and in 2011 there were still 376. The municipality has a very low population density: only 43.4 inhabitants per square kilometer.
