Poiano
Hi friends, let's talk about Poiano di Valpantena!
Poiano is a beautiful hamlet near Verona, in Veneto. It is located approximately 6 km northeast of the city center and is situated at an altitude of 83 meters above sea level. The area is home to 1998 people and is part of the Circoscrizione 8 Nord-Est.
The history of Poiano's name
The hamlet has a long history and was recorded as "Puliano" in 861 and "Pollano" in 1184. Both of these names seem to refer to the Roman farm "Pullianus," or "Pullio's land." According to popular etymology, the name instead comes from the Latin expression "Podium Iani," or "Giano's Hill." The location is the first in the Valpantena for a traveler coming from Verona and, so to speak, "opens the doors" to the valley. Hence the parallelism with the Roman god Janus, protector of the threshold.
Monuments and places of interest
Poiano has several interesting monuments to visit. One of them is the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built from 1819 to 1830 according to the design of Giuseppe Barbieri. The church is dedicated to the saints Peter and Paul and has a beautiful facade. In addition, a visit to the Church of Madonna dell'Altarol, built in the seventeenth century and located in the Clocego district, cannot be missed.
Roads and transportation
Poiano is crossed by Provincial Road 6 and once had a stop along the Verona-Grezzana tramway. Today, it is near the "Grezzana-Bosco Chiesanuova" exit on the Verona East Ring Road, the highway connection that connects Valpantena to the A4 motorway (Italy) (Verona east exit) and the South Ring Road of Verona.
