Montepiano

Welcome to Montepiano!

Hello everyone! Today I will be talking about Montepiano, a beautiful village in the municipality of Vernio located in the region of Tuscany.

Description of the village

Montepiano is situated on an Apennine pass at 700 meters above sea level and is one of the lowest passes in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The village takes its name from the flat valley formed by the Setta stream and developed around the 11th century with the birth of the Abbey of Santa Maria. The eighteenth-century village is located along the modern state road. Montepiano had a tourist development as a climatic resort since the late 1800s and some old villas and hotels still testify to this past. Today Montepiano is mainly a destination for those who own a second home or summer visitors.

In the village there are two churches, the Abbey of Santa Maria and the modern Church of Santa Maria. Lake Fiorenzo, located near the village, is artificial and is often used for fishing.

Near the village there are some small localities, part of Montepiano, such as Risubbiani, La Storaia, Castagnaccio and Mulinaccio. Furthermore, nearby are two historic villas, Villa Sperling and Villa Principessa Strozzi.

Montepiano: a Tuscan village between history and nature.
