The territory of Vernate has been an agricultural area since ancient times, and in fact, an ancient decumanus of a Roman camp was discovered in the center of the city. The city continued to develop in the following centuries and underwent numerous changes.
Places of interest: the churches
If you are a lover of religious architecture, do not miss the parish church of Santa Maria Nascente in Moncucco. This church, with an interior of three aisles that measures 25 meters in length and 10 meters in width, is the largest in Vernate. The bell tower, also standing at 29 meters, is an unusual attraction as it is located above the façade of the church. The concert of six bells in Fa3 was made by Capanni in 1989, while the two ancient bells date back to 1676 and 1747.
The church of Sant'Eufemia in Vernate, documented since the 11th century, became a parish in the 17th century. Today, most of the frescoes that were present inside have been lost, but the structure still retains its original beauty. The bell tower has three bells in Lab3. The church is part of the Parish of Pasturago.
The Church of Mulino Vecchio was a pilgrimage site built in the sixteenth century to house a miraculous image. Today, this church has been renovated and features new vibrant colors. It is worth visiting while exploring the countryside around Moncucco.
The Oratory of the Holy Crucifix, built in Coazzano, was built in 1357 at the behest of Bianca di Savoia when she received the surrounding lands as a gift from her husband Galeazzo II Visconti. This oratory is located near the Visconti castle.
The Coazzano Castle

Built in the mid-fourteenth century, the castle was later adapted into a convent of the Clarisses of Pavia. Today, it is in use as a farm and offers a unique experience to visitors who want to explore its internal and external architecture.

In the past, the population of Vernate has undergone various fluctuations. In 1751, there were only 168 inhabitants, but by 1805 this number had increased to 360. After the annexation of Moncucco Vecchio and Casorate Primo, the population had risen to 530 in 1853. In 1871, after the annexation of Moncucco Vecchio, Pasturago, and Coazzano, the population was 1,870 inhabitants.

According to ISTAT data from 2009, Vernate had 161 foreign residents. The most represented nationalities were Romanians, who made up 1.58% of the resident population.

The municipal territory of Vernate includes the inhabited center and the hamlets of Coazzano, Merlate, Moncucco Vecchio, and Pasturago, as well as the inhabited localities of Cascina Mogna, Cascina Morivione, and San Giuseppe.
