Welcome to Vermezzo, a charming location in Lombardy, with ancient history and monuments of great architectural value.
History
Vermezzo has a rich and ancient history. In 2019, it merged with the neighboring municipality of Zelo Surrigone to form the new municipality of Vermezzo con Zelo, but it's not the first time such a measure has been taken. In fact, during the Napoleonic era, it had already undergone a similar modification.
Symbols
The coat of arms of Vermezzo dates back to February 6, 1978 and features a green field that recalls the ancient name Viridis medium, accompanied by the image of a silver eagle and the castle, representing the past of the Pozzobonelli family, owners of the ancient building from the 13th to the 18th century.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Religious Architecture
The church of San Zenone is one of the most important monuments in Vermezzo. Dedicated to the patron saint of the village, it was originally linked to the pieve of Rosate, but was transformed into Baroque style in the 18th century and is characterized by numerous frescoes.
Notable Buildings
The Palazzo Pozzobonelli-Panigarola stands in the characteristic Piazza Comunale and is a Renaissance residence attributed to the famous Bramante. Initially owned by the Pozzobonelli family, it was renovated in the 15th century by Gottardo Panigarola, a loyal collaborator of the Visconti family. The palace returned to the hands of the Pozzobonelli family after some time and was expanded and decorated by Cardinal Giuseppe Pozzobonelli. Unfortunately, it is not open for internal visits as it is privately owned.
The Cascina Grande is located at the entrance of the village and is a medieval farmhouse with a unique and fascinating architecture. It was owned by the Pozzobonelli family and was restored in the 1920s by the mayor of Vermezzo, Ovidio Capelli, who reproduced the towers of the Sforza Castle in Milan inside the farmhouse. The complex features battlements, brick silos, and barns that reproduce the architecture of three-naved churches.
