Cuirone
Welcome to Cuirone, the hamlet of Vergiate
Cuirone is a small hamlet in the municipality of Vergiate, located north of the town center. It is situated on the hills behind Corgeno, characterized by the presence of Monte San Giacomo, a wooded morainic hill that represents the highest point of the Lombard Natural Park of the Ticino Valley.
The history of Cuirone
The history of Cuirone dates back to the 18th century when it was a village of about 230 inhabitants. In 1786, it became part of the Province of Varese and then continuously changed administrative references in 1791, 1798, and 1799. In 1805, with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, the village had 302 inhabitants and grew in 1809 by incorporating Cimbro and Corgeno.
However, in 1811, it was abolished and annexed to Vergiate by decree of Napoleon Bonaparte. But with the return of the Austrian Empire, the Municipality of Cuvirone was restored, and the settlement was found to be populated by 486 people in 1853, rising to 522 in 1861. Finally, in 1869, with the decree of Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia, the municipal autonomy was definitively abolished, and the union with Vergiate was proposed on the Napoleonic model.
Monte San Giacomo
Monte San Giacomo is the highest hill of the Lombard Natural Park of the Ticino Valley at 427 meters above sea level. It is characterized by the presence of dense vegetation mainly composed of oak, chestnut, and beech forests, making it an ideal place for excursions and walks in nature.
The panoramic view from Monte San Giacomo is breathtaking, and you can admire a vast stretch of Lombard plain and, on clearer days, the Alps and Monte Rosa.
Cuirone today
Today, Cuirone is a quiet hamlet of the Municipality of Vergiate with a population of about 600 inhabitants, but it preserves traces of its ancient history and rural life. There are numerous commercial activities, including restaurants and bars, serving typical local dishes and, in particular, Lombard cuisine.
Cuirone also hosts numerous cultural events and village festivals held throughout the year, such as the famous Festival of Madonna delle Grazie, held every August, and the Potato Festival, which celebrates one of the typical products of the area.
