Cimbro: a historic fraction of the Municipality of Vergiate

Cimbro, also known as Cimber in the Varese dialect, is a geographic fraction of the Italian Municipality of Vergiate, located northeast of the town center. Once an autonomous municipality until 1869, it was consolidated into the municipality of Mornago and then two years later, separated and consolidated into Vergiate. In this article, we will explore the history of Cimbro, its culture, geography, and events.

History

Cimbro was an ancient municipality of the province of Milan. Recorded in 1751 as a village of about 155 inhabitants, in 1786, Cimbro was part of the short-lived Province of Varese for five years before continuously changing its administrative references in 1791, 1798, and 1799. In 1805, at the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, it had 192 inhabitants. In 1809, it was suppressed by Napoleon's decree and annexed to Cuvirone, which was then consolidated into Vergiate in 1811. The Municipality of Cimbro was later restored with the return of the Austrian Empire, and the village was populated by 298 people in 1853, rising to 359 in 1861. The suppression of the autonomous municipality came finally in 1869 by decree of Vittorio Emanuele II, who decided to unify Cimbro with Mornago. However, after only two years, the village was once again brought back to Vergiate.
