Discovering Verdello, the city in the province of Bergamo
Hello everyone! Today I am taking you on a journey to discover a beautiful town in the province of Bergamo: Verdello, also known as Erdèl in Bergamo dialect. With its 8,058 inhabitants, Verdello is located in the high Po Valley, about 10 kilometers southwest of Bergamo.
Physical geography of Verdello
The municipality of Verdello borders Levate to the north, Pognano and Arcene to the south, Comun Nuovo to the east, and Ciserano and Verdellino to the west. The territory of Verdello is located on the border of the alluvial cones of the rivers Serio and Brembo, where the Morla canal flows along the border with Verdellino. The territory of Verdello is very interesting from a geological point of view, as it contains the morphological characteristics of the past network of waterways, generated by the melting of the Alpine glaciers at the end of the last glaciation.
The history of Verdello
The territory of Verdello hides an incredibly ancient history, with the oldest objects found dating back to prehistory and consisting of a large group of worked flint stones from the Neolithic period. Subsequently, the Golasecca Celtic period, dating back to the 6th-5th centuries BC, proved to be important. Towards the end of the 2nd century BC, the Latins proceeded to colonize the territory, reclaiming the land and creating an important road network. During the Middle Ages, there were barbarian invasions followed by the Lombards and Franks, with whom the local population found a way to coexist. In the 9th century, the first written records of Verdello and the existence of a castle, owned by the powerful Ghibelline family of the Suardis, can be traced. In 1358, soldiers of Bernabò Visconti laid waste to the town, destroying the castle tower and burning 300 people alive, including men, women, and children. With annexation to the Republic of Venice in 1428, a period of relative tranquility began, which favored the development of the town. In 1797, Napoleon occupied the territories of the Republic of Venice, giving birth to the Cisalpine Republic. This had a short life, so much so that in 1815 Lombardy passed into the hands of the Austrian Empire, which established the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom. In 1857, the emperor of Austria inaugurated the Ferdinandea railway line, which, with the Verdello-Dalmine station, further promoted the development of the town. With the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, Verdello gradually moved from a predominantly agricultural to a partially industrial economy. The city's coat of arms and banner were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on August 5, 1991.
