Verdellino

Welcome to Verdellino: a brief introduction to the city

Hello everyone! Welcome to Verdellino, an Italian municipality located in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy. With its 7,480 residents, Verdellino is a medium-sized city located in the central plain of Bergamo, about 13 kilometers south of the city of Bergamo.

But Verdellino is not just any city. Its history dates back to the time of the Roman Empire and the first archaeological evidence, now walled in the back facade of the parish house, dates back to that historical period.

But the city is not just ancient history. In the post-World War II period, the city was involved in an important urbanization and industrialization project that envisioned the creation of a new industrial center with 50,000 inhabitants, called Zingonia. The project was not fully completed, but it brought significant economic growth to the city.

The History of Verdellino

The history of Verdellino dates back to the time of the Roman Empire. Archaeologists have found evidence of urban settlements in that historical period. Some sources believe that the name of the municipality derives from "virides", which means "green" in Latin, due to the large extension of green meadows in the area.

However, recent studies suggest that the first settlements originated in the Gallic Cenomani era, as suggested by the suffix "vir-", of Celtic origin.

The first written documents mentioning the municipality date back to the year 1010, when it was referred to as "Verdello Minore". In the 14th century, the city underwent violent clashes between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. In 1358, Bernabò Visconti burned down the village of Verdellino and other nearby cities.

During this period, the communal properties of Verdello Minore were owned by the Suardi family, which sided with the Ghibellines. This led to the construction of numerous fortifications, including a castle.

The situation was only resolved in 1408, when Pandolfo III Malatesta assigned most of the lands of Verdello Maggiore to the Suardi family. The situation was definitively resolved in 1428 when the Republic of Venice arrived, issuing a series of decrees to improve the social and economic situation of the city.

In 1797, the city passed to the Cisalpine Republic, but in 1815 it was included in the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom of the Austrian Empire. Finally, in 1859, the city became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
