History of Carnia

Carnia was an important passage location due to its central position between Carnia and the Carnic Alps, and the Valcanale and the Julian Alps. In 1879, the opening of the Pontebbana railway led to the development of the village. The Carnia station was built to serve the Carnia area.

During World War II, the Carnia station was one of the departure points for German trains deporting Jews to concentration camps in Germany. The station was destroyed during the war and later reconstructed in a new location.

Carnia and the nearby municipalities of Venzone and Gemona del Friuli suffered significant damage from the earthquake of 1976.

Monuments and Places of Interest

The parish church of San Pietro Apostolo, dating back to the 19th century, was destroyed by the earthquake of 1976 and subsequently rebuilt in a contemporary style. The building was consecrated on October 10, 1998. Inside, the church preserves a baptismal font and a sculptural work of the "Crucifixion," both in walnut, created by the local sculptor Franco Maschio. A mosaic depicting "San Pietro" was created by Luigi Mirolo.

In Carnia, there are two military barracks, one built during the French occupation, on which a phrase is engraved. The other barracks is now out of use because the Feruglio Barracks of Venzone, home to the 8th Alpine Regiment, are now in use.
