Grimaldi

Welcome to Grimaldi!

Hi everyone! Today I want to talk to you about the beautiful village of Grimaldi, located in the town of Ventimiglia, in the province of Imperia. About 281 people live here, and the area is characterized by its border with France, precisely at Ponte San Luigi.

But let's get to the history. It seems that the name Grimaldi derives from the Genoese knight Carlo I of Monaco, ancestor of the Princes of Monaco, who acquired these lands in 1351. Over the centuries, the toponym has undergone various modifications, from the original "Grimalde" to the more recent "Grimaldi".

Places of interest

Here we are at the most interesting part: the monuments and places to visit in Grimaldi!

Let's start with religious architecture. The parish church of the Guardian Angels is located in the historic center and was established in 1947. It is a very suggestive place, where you can breathe in the local history and spirituality.

We then move on to civil architecture, where the Voronoff or Grimaldi Castle stands out, located in Corso Mentone 50, in the lower part of Grimaldi. The well-known Russian surgeon and researcher Serge Voronoff lived and worked here for years. The castle is a place of great charm, where you can relive the splendor of the Belle Époque.

For those interested in military history, there is the Grimaldi Tower (also known as the Customs Tower, Saracen Tower or Corsican Tower), an imposing fortification overlooking the coast and which has witnessed battles of the past epochs.

Finally, for nature lovers, there is the nearby town of Balzi Rossi, where the famous "Grotto of the Children" with very ancient human remains is located. Here, the "Grimaldian Civilization" was also discovered, a prehistoric culture that already used the cult of the dead and left traces throughout the area.

Grimaldi: between history, nature, and the tragedy of war.

Tragedy of War

Unfortunately, in the history of Grimaldi, there is also a sad page. On December 7th, 1944, a German patrol led by a local spy raided the "Vittoria" hotel, capturing and then shooting twelve civilians who had found shelter there.

It is important to remember these events so as not to forget how much was sacrificed in the fight against Nazism. Memory must be a tool to learn from past mistakes and build a better future.

Conclusions

So, this concludes our virtual tour of Grimaldi, a village that preserves historical and naturalistic treasures. I hope I made you want to visit and discover the beauty of this place in person.

I'll see you in the next article, always with information and curiosities about the wonders of Italy!
