Origins of the name "Calamigna"

The name "Calamigna" has two possible etymological roots. The first refers to the ancient settlement and the Arab conquest, which would have added the prefix "Qal'ah" (= fortified castle) to the pre-existing area called "moenia" (walls), which became "-migna", meaning "fortified walls", due to the wide walls that surrounded the site. The second hypothesis derives the name from the Greek "kalamos" (reed) and the Latin "calaminius" (made of reeds).

The History of Ventimiglia di Sicilia

The city has ancient origins, dating back to around the 5th century BC, with a settlement composed of a "castle" and smaller scattered buildings, surrounded by wide fortified walls. The walls could reach a height of 3-4 meters and their width is about 1 meter throughout. In the municipal territory, Late Antiquity artifacts have also been found, such as the Byzantine Imperial Seal with monogram dating back to the (late) 7th century.
