Hi everyone! Today I'm going to talk to you about Turin, a magical city rich in history and culture. Located in the Piedmont region in northern Italy, Turin has a population of 842,472 and is considered the third most important and global city in the country.

Physical geography

Territory

The city is located in the Piedmont plain, delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po rivers, which run through the entire city. Turin is surrounded by Alpine valleys, such as the Val di Susa, which connects it to France through the famous Frejus tunnels (Frejus Rail Tunnel and Frejus Road Tunnel), as well as the Lanzo Valleys and Val Sangone.

Turin: history, culture and UNESCO heritage.

History

Foundation

Turin has an ancient and two-thousand-year-old history. Founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, it was later transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name "Iulia Augusta Taurinorum" in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogothic rule, Turin became the capital of an important Duchy, and later came under the lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century.

Capital of the Kingdom

The city became part of the Duchy of Savoy and its capital in 1563. In 1720, Turin became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861), a state that would lead to the Italian Risorgimento in the 19th century and make Turin the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) from 1861 to 1865.

Economy

Industry

Turin is the heart of the Italian industry, especially the automotive industry, complemented by important sectors such as publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, food and wine, space (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

Culture

UNESCO Heritage

Turin has an extraordinarily rich and interesting culture. Its territory hosts buildings included in two UNESCO-protected sites: some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of the Savoy Residences in Piedmont (world heritage) and the Po Hills area (biosphere reserve).

Events and attractions

Turin has hosted major events such as the 1911 International Exposition, the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006, the ATP Finals in 2021, and the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022. The city is famous for producing some of the most well-known "Made in Italy" products, such as vermouth, Gianduiotti chocolates, breadsticks, and espresso coffee. Among its attractions are also important cultural institutions, such as its universities, the Ettore Fico Museum, and the National Cinema Museum.

I hope this brief presentation has given you an idea of the beauty and history of Turin! I can't wait to visit this fantastic city with its cultural treasures, delicious cuisine, and sensational atmosphere.
