Welcome to Veleso: history and geography of the municipality in the province of Como
Welcome to Veleso, a municipality of 201 inhabitants located in the mountainous area of the Larian Triangle, at the foot of Mount San Primo, in the province of Como, Lombardy. In this text, we will explore the history, geography, and symbols of this picturesque municipality.
Physical geography
The territory of Veleso is characterized by the presence of mountains, with Mount San Primo towering majestically in the background. Other notable places are the village of Erno and the scattered group of houses called Gorla, all recognized by the community.
Origin of the name
The toponym Veleso would derive from a Celtic term whose meaning would be "seen from afar." This seems to be evident as the city enjoys a spectacular view of the surrounding valley.
History
The origins of Veleso date back to the period of the Statutes of Como of 1335, where it is mentioned as part of the parish of Nesso. Over the centuries, it followed the fortunes of the parish of Nesso, gifted by Ludovico il Moro to Lucrezia Crivelli in 1497. In 1647, it was granted to the Casnedi family until 1787, when the last male heir died, and the parish returned to the Royal Chamber of the Duchy of Milan.
Over the years, Veleso has grown and developed as an autonomous municipal entity. In 1741, Erno temporarily joined Veleso, but in 1753 it was definitively reunited with Veleso. In 1797, the mason Pietro Zerboni, who emigrated from Erno to Germany, for the first time in Italy imported a machine for weaving wire mesh, giving rise to a weaving business that involved workers from Veleso and Zelbio.
In 1807, a decree of administrative reorganization of the Kingdom of Italy sanctioned the annexation of Veleso and Erno to Nesso, but this decision was canceled by the Restoration. In 1928, Veleso merged with Zelbio to become "Zelbio-Veleso," a union abolished in 1948, when the municipality was reconstituted with the villages of Erno and Gorla.
Symbols
The municipality of Veleso has both a coat of arms and a gonfalon, granted by decree of the President of the Republic on February 9, 1994. The coat of arms depicts a mountain with three peaks, symbolizing the mountainous geography of the territory. The central part of the coat of arms is inspired by the quartered of the lordship of the Crivelli family, with the addition of a golden sieve. The stars on the bottom represent the village itself, the village of Erno, and the scattered group of houses known as Gorla.
Conclusions
Veleso is a small gem in the mountainous area of the Larian Triangle. With a history dating back centuries, it offers a spectacular panoramic view and a welcoming community. If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature, Veleso is the right place for you.
