Origin of the name

The name "Vecchiano" probably derives from the Latin personal name "Vetuleius" or "Venuleius". The Venuleii family, owners of the lands between the village of Corliano and Lake Massaciuccoli, built the Roman aqueduct of Caldaccoli and the Baths of Nero.

History

Vecchiano was part of the Palatine Forest of the Holy Roman Empire and later came under the control of the Republics of Pisa and Lucca. In 1406, it became part of the territories of the Florentine Republic. During World War II, the retreating Germans brought massacres and deportations to the surrounding area.
