Pessola: a small village in the province of Parma

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Pessola, a charming hamlet located in the municipality of Varsi, in the province of Parma. Despite being a small village, it has an ancient history and fascinating monuments, which should be visited at least once in a lifetime.

Physical geography

Pessola is located on the left bank of the Pessola stream, at an altitude of 784 meters above sea level. The habitat is characterized by the presence of Mount Dosso and the Merlo and Gottea streams.

History

The presence of humans in this area dates back to the Copper Age; a green diorite axe was found near the Church of Santa Maria Immacolata. In the Middle Ages, a castle was built to defend the area, which passed into the hands of the Municipality of Piacenza in 1271. Later, it came under the control of the Pallavicino di Pellegrino Parmense marquises, but in 1472 the fief was assigned to Lodovico Sforza Fogliani.

Church of Santa Maria Immacolata

The Church of Santa Maria Immacolata is a place of worship redesigned in the seventeenth century, and then rebuilt in neoclassical style after a landslide in 1856. It has a projecting facade decorated with Ionic order pilasters and large cement statues, and inside it is adorned with Doric order pilasters and frescoes. It was restored in 1957 and again in 1976.

Castle

The Pessola castle was built around the thirteenth century by Armando da Pessola, but then came under the control of the Municipality of Piacenza in 1271. Later it became the property of the Pallavicino di Pellegrino Parmense marquises and then the Sforza Fogliani, who abandoned it and left it to decay.
