Novacella

Discover the story of Novacella!

Hello friends! Today I will tell you about Novacella, a municipality in the autonomous province of Bolzano that, in 1929, was abolished and incorporated into the municipality of Varna, becoming one of its fractions.

History

Novacella has a long and interesting history. Until the end of the 1920s, it was an autonomous municipality, but then it was incorporated into Varna. The area on which Novacella is located was already inhabited in Roman times, as evidenced by the numerous ruins of villas and farms in the area. In the Middle Ages, the area was dominated by the powerful bishop of Bressanone, who had founded one of his most important abbeys here: the Abbey of Novacella.

Monuments and places of interest

If you decide to visit Novacella, you absolutely cannot miss the Abbey of Novacella, the most suggestive place in this village. Founded in 1142 by Augustinian monks, the abbey represents one of the most important monuments in the region and constitutes one of the best examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in South Tyrol.

Another tourist attraction to visit is the church of Santa Margherita. Built between the XIII and XV centuries, the church is an example of Gothic architecture.

Notes

As we have said, the territory of Novacella is no longer an autonomous municipality, but constitutes a fraction of the municipality of Varna. However, its history and culture are still very present in the daily life of its inhabitants.
