Church of San Giorgio

The Church of San Giorgio is one of the main monuments of Varenna. Built in Romanesque style in the 12th century, the church has undergone numerous modifications and enlargements over the centuries. Inside the church there are important works of art, including an altarpiece from the 15th century and a painting by Leonardo da Vinci depicting the Madonna with the Carnation.

Castle of Vezio

The Castle of Vezio is a fortress located on the hill of Vezio, a few kilometers from Varenna. Built in medieval times, the castle offers a spectacular panoramic view of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains. Today it is possible to visit the castle and participate in guided tours to discover its history and legends.

Villa Monastero

Villa Monastero is a sumptuous historic residence located on the shores of Lake Como in Varenna. Built in the 18th century as a convent, the villa was later transformed into a noble residence and a botanical garden. Sentiero del Viandante

The Sentiero del Viandante is a hiking trail that crosses the hills above Varenna, offering spectacular views of Lake Como. The trail, about 45 km long, takes its name from the figure of the wanderer who traveled it in medieval times to reach the monasteries and hermitages in the surrounding mountains. Today, the trail represents a popular tourist attraction and is ideal for trekking or mountain biking.

Feast of San Giovanni Battista

The Feast of San Giovanni Battista is one of the main festivals in Varenna, celebrated every year on June 24th. During the festivities, Lake Como is illuminated by thousands of floating candles, in memory of the exodus of the Comacines who took refuge in Varenna after the destruction of the Isola Comacina. During the festival, various activities such as concerts, traditional games, and fireworks shows are also held.

Feast of San Martino

The Feast of San Martino is another traditional festival in Varenna, celebrated every year in November. During the festival, stalls of local products, wine tastings, and gastronomic specialties are organized.

Polenta and lake fish

The cuisine of Varenna is mainly based on dishes made with Lake Como fish. Among the most typical dishes are "missoltini", dried small fish that are fried in a pan, and polenta, which is accompanied by lake fish. Other traditional dishes are "risotto with perch" and "pike in the Como style".
