Vaprio d'Agogna
Welcome to Vaprio d'Agogna!
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Vaprio d'Agogna, a small municipality of about 962 inhabitants located in the province of Novara, in Piedmont. Vaprio, or as it is called by its residents, "Vaver" or "Vavru" in Piedmontese and Lombard languages, is a charming place with an ancient history that dates back to the Celtic era.
A characteristic landscape
Vaprio is located in a medium-hilly area of the province of Novara, characterized by formations of morainic origin. Here you can find watercourses such as the Agogna and the Terdoppio, as well as numerous canals used for irrigation of the fields. The village is perfect for nature lovers, thanks also to the presence of vast uncultivated wooded areas. Here you can admire the beauty of the Piedmont countryside, as well as taste local products such as corn, grains, and vines.

An ancient history
Vaprio d'Agogna has an ancient history that dates back to the Celtic era. The first indigenous inhabitants settled here already in the pre-Roman era, but it was with the arrival of the Vertamocori, a tribe of Celtic origin, that the first real settlement of Vaprio developed. In fact, the name of the village derives from the Gallic term "Wabero", which means "narrow valley with a sunken river". With the Roman colonization, the settlement moved to the flat area, where the village is still located today. The presence of the Romans was demonstrated by the discovery of a votive Roman altar dedicated to Jupiter Optimus Maximus, during the construction of the local castle in the 12th-14th centuries.
A village under various fiefs
As a small settlement, Vaprio never experienced a great expansion, being placed under various fiefs throughout its history. It was assigned in the medieval era to the County of Pombia, and then passed to the Counts of Biandrate. In 1402, the Duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti delivered the fief to the Novara noble Barbavara, who then sold it to Cristoforo di Casate. In 1534, the fief was handed over to the lord of Fontaneto d'Agogna, Galeazzo Visconti, remaining under that family until the early 19th century.
