Valmacca

Welcome to Valmacca!

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a beautiful Piedmontese municipality called Valmacca. With its 1002 inhabitants, Valmacca is located in the province of Alessandria and represents a wonderful discovery for those looking for a relaxing place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. In my article, I will try to tell you about the history of this locality, show you its monuments and places of interest, give you some data on its demographic evolution, and provide you with all the useful information about its administration and contacts.

History

Valmacca is a small municipality with a very interesting history. Its name, ''Varmaca'' or ''Uarmaca'' in Piedmontese, probably derives from the Latin term "Villa Marca", meaning "Villa of Marco." In the Middle Ages, Valmacca was one of the many hamlets of Monferrato and, like many other places in the area, was contested between the Marquises of Monferrato and the city of Alessandria. During the 17th century, the village was involved in the struggles for the independence of Piedmont and, following Napoleon's defeat, became an autonomous municipality.

Symbols

Valmacca has two very important symbols: the coat of arms and the gonfalon. The coat of arms is composed of a split shield, with the first field of gold with eight green hillocks, the second field of red with a merlata tower of silver, opened and windowed in black, in the Guelf style. The gonfalon, instead, consists of a blue flag with a white band and with the emblem of the municipality placed in the center.

Monuments and places of interest

Despite being a small village, Valmacca offers many tourist attractions. One of the most important monuments in the village is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. This church, built in the 18th century in a Baroque style, has a beautiful brick and sandstone facade. The interior of the church is decorated with stuccoes and paintings by artists of the time. In addition, the church houses many works of art, including a canvas from the 17th century depicting the Madonna with child and saints.

Society

Demographic evolution

Valmacca is a municipality that, in recent years, has experienced a constant increase in population. In 1951, the municipality had only 828 inhabitants, while in 2018 they reached 1002. This demographic increase is mainly due to the proximity of the city of Alessandria, which offers many job and study opportunities.
