Physical geography
Vallo di Nera is located on a hill in the Valnerina, the valley of the Nera River. Its privileged position makes it a perfect place to enjoy the beauty of the landscape. The climate is classified as zone E, 2128 GR/G.
History
The first traces of settlements were found in the 8th century B.C. The Romanization of Valnerina gave life to the historical era of Valdinarco. In 1177, Vallo di Nera became a feud of the Germanic Duke of Spoleto Corrado di Urslingen and the Rocca de Valle was built on the Flezano hill. In 1217, the inhabitants of the village were granted permission to erect a castle, becoming an important strategic point for controlling the roads. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle was the most populous in Valdinarco. In 1881, the municipality of Vallo di Nera merged with that of Meggiano-Paterno.
Monuments and places of interest
Vallo di Nera is an authentic monument village. You can walk through the walls and towers of this medieval village and visit its churches and historic buildings. The Church of Santa Maria houses the famous "Procession of the Whites", painted by Cola di Pietro da Camerino in 1401. Outside the walls are the Church of San Rocco and that of the Image of the Gallows. Also interesting are the two dovecote towers in the 16th-century Borgo dei Casali.
