The history of Vallo della Lucania
The municipality was originally known as "Castrum Cornutum," according to the historian Giuseppe Maiese. Its founders came from the city of Cornutum, in Dalmatia, and arrived in Vallo around the 9th century. In 1052, a document refers to a "loco cornito," which seems to have been a thriving economic center and a residence of a Lombard official delegated by the central government for the political-judicial-military administration of the area. In Vallo, there were two farms: Spio and Cornuti (or Vallo), divided by a river crossed by two bridges. During the seventeenth century, despite the continued famines and the plague that had decimated the population, Spio and Cornuti played a significant role in the State of Novi. In the eighteenth century, the town changed its original name to "Vallo di Novi" and later to "Vallo." This period was characterized by the prosperity of silk and leather processing, which made Vallo a leading economic center.
Vallo della Lucania today
