Physical geography
Vallemaio is located about 300 meters above sea level and only 30 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea, although in winter the climate can be quite cold. The municipal territory is characterized by two wide valleys, one of which is dedicated to agricultural activities and livestock farming. The vegetation is very dense and the village is part of the Valley of Saints. In short, here you can breathe clean air and uncontaminated nature.
Origin of the name
The name "Vallemaio" derives from Mount Maio that overlooks the village, but before 1932 the municipality was called "Vallefredda" due to the cold climate that occurs here in winter.
History
Vallemaio has a long history, which has seen the village suffer attacks and conquests by various powers. During World War II, Vallemaio suffered serious damage due to the fighting that took place on Mount Maio, but today the village has been reborn and presents itself to the visitor with its ancient buildings, narrow streets, and 15th century walls.

Vallemaio is a village with a great cultural heritage, despite the devastation suffered during the war. For example, the Church of the Annunciation is a valuable example of sacred art: the portal of 1553 is surmounted by a large stone oculus and on the main altar there is a triptych from the 16th century depicting the Annunciation. In addition, the Church of the Rosary has a 16th century portal and has been rebuilt to become a cultural center.
