Vallecrosia

Welcome to Vallecrosia

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Vallecrosia, a beautiful municipality in the province of Imperia, in Liguria. The town has 6632 inhabitants and is located by the Ligurian Sea, near the mouth of the Verbone stream. From a climate perspective, it is in a tempered Mediterranean zone. Although there may be weak frosts from time to time, snowfall is very rare.

The origin of the name

The original name of this place was Vallis Vervonis, which means the Valley of Verbena. This toponym was due to the presence of Verbena, a plant sacred to the Romans that grew abundantly in this area. Due to its geographical characteristic, the population moved inland, where there was a short and narrow valley, namely Crosa Valley, closed upstream by Poggio di Perinaldo.

Vallecrosia: sea, mountain and history in Liguria.

History of Vallecrosia

According to some studies, it is hypothesized that the first nucleus of the town was founded by the Roman Empire along the coast. Later, the community of Vallecrosia moved inland, founding new villages and hamlets such as Vallecrosia Alta, due to frequent Saracen invasions. The city suffered the strong pressure of Ventimiglia, but was officially recognized by the Republic of Genoa in 1686, as part of the Magnificent Community of the Eight Places. This community included Borghetto San Nicolò, Bordighera, San Biagio della Cima, Sasso (Bordighera), Soldano, Vallebona, and Vallecrosia. The town came under the jurisdiction of Palme in the canton of Bordighera and Ventimiglia in Ulivi in 1802, until it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia after the Congress of Vienna in 1814.
