The history of Pieve

The territory of Pieve has played an important role for Cadore since ancient times. Numerous archaeological finds have been found in the territory of Pieve, including a Roman building that is still well preserved. On the slopes of Mount Ricco, for example, at the end of the nineteenth century, the walls of a room were found inside which a Diana huntress statue 10 cm high, various Roman coins, a bronze patera with a dedication to Mars in Latin, two spoons and a shovel were recovered, probably dating back to the period between the end of the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD.

Also on Mount Ricco, in 1889, a broken bronze object with Venetian inscriptions was found.

At the MARC - Cadorino Archaeological Museum, various artifacts from Monte Ricco and Monte Castello are preserved, where some Roman coins were found, including one of Constantine (337-340 AD). In the current center of Pieve, in the excavations for the construction of the city hall, the remains of a Roman building were found, now restored, dating back to the 2nd century.

Various testimonies tell that in the area, when building other houses, walls were found but they were never able to document them. Only in 2004, with the renewal of Piazza Tiziano, some excavations allowed to discover in front of the entrance of the Gran Caffè Tiziano, a stratification of several centuries together with interesting finds, including an altar with a Latin inscription, a bone fragment inscribed in Venetic, a fragment of a terracotta vase.

Pieve is also famous for being the birthplace of the painter Tiziano Vecellio.
