Seismology

Being located in the seismic district of Irpinia, the territory of Vallata has been affected by several earthquakes that have hit the area over the decades. However, do not be discouraged: local authorities have done a great job to ensure the safety and stability of buildings, and the town enjoys a seismic classification of zone 1 (high seismicity).

Other Geographical Information

Vallata is also famous for its position within the special protection area of the Baronia Woods and Springs, an area of great natural interest that has given rise to the inter-municipal urban park "Boschi e Sorgenti della Baronia". If you love nature walks, this park is an absolute must-visit.

Origins of the Name

As regards the origin of the name of the town, there are two possible hypotheses. According to the first, the name derives from the geographical position of the town, which is located on a hill between two valleys. The second hypothesis instead maintains that the name derives from the position of the first settlements, which developed in the lower part of the current town center.

History

The history of Vallata dates back to the Middle Ages, when documents referring to a certain "Ruggero da Vallata" were found in 1111. Traces of the city walls from that era are still visible in some parts of the town. However, some artifacts from recent excavations testify to the presence of a settlement already in prehistoric times.

In the nineteenth century, Vallata was part of the Castelbaronia district within the Principality Ultra in the kingdom of the Two Sicilies. After the Unification of Italy, the town became part of the Castelbaronia district within the district of Ariano di Puglia in the province of Avellino.

Symbols

The coat of arms of the municipality of Vallata is formed by a palm of laurel containing two arrows, two ears of wheat, and three flowers enclosed in an oval shape. The gonfalon, on the other hand, consists of a turreted crown with a palm of laurel and oak in the lower part.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Starting from the historic center, the mother church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo is one of the most important monuments in Vallata. Dating back to the year 1000, this church has been rebuilt several times due to earthquakes that have hit the area. Inside, you can admire a majestic painting depicting the martyrdom of San Bartolomeo, as well as a statue of the saint venerated in the same church.

In general, Vallata is characterized by religious architectures of great charm, such as the church of Madonna delle Grazie, the church of San Francesco, and the church of Sant'Antonio Abate.
