Vallarsa
Vallarsa: Trentino's Valley with a Mysterious Name
If you are looking for a charming place to spend your holidays, Vallarsa might be the perfect place for you. This municipality in the autonomous province of Trento is located in the beautiful Adige Valley.
Physical Geography
Vallarsa is a valley formed by the Leno River, which runs through it. This valley is located between the Carega and Pasubio Groups, on Mount Corno Battisti. During the First World War, this valley was the scene of fierce battles between Italians and Austrians.
There are three artificial hydroelectric reservoirs in the valley: Lake Speccheri, Lake Busa, and Lake San Colombano. These reservoirs provide energy to the province of Trento.
Origins of the Name
It is not known exactly where the name Vallarsa comes from. However, there are many theories about it. Some believe that the name derives from the words "Valle" and "arsa," which means "arid" or "burnt."
Others believe that the name derives from the Rhaetian root "ars," which means steep or rocky because the valley is very rainy. Regardless of the origins of the name, what really matters is the unique and welcoming atmosphere that awaits you in Vallarsa.
History
Vallarsa has an interesting and intricate history. In 1234, the Trento bishop Wanga imposed on Giacomo Castelbarco, lord of Lizzana, to welcome settlers from Grez and allow them to settle in scattered farms.
Later, Vallarsa and the nearby Terragnolo became part of the Pretura of Roveredo, to which the emperor granted some privileges, such as exemption from consumption taxes.
In the 15th century, and until 1509, Vallarsa, like the entire Vallagarina, was under the dominion of the Serenissima Republic of Venice. In 1443, the representatives of the valley went to the Doge Andrea Vendramin to implore the maintenance of some privileges, which were then ratified by the Doge Francesco Foscari.
During the First World War, the population was forced to evacuate the area. The inhabitants of the upper part of the valley were deported to various parts of Italy, while those who lived in the lower part were transferred to Austrian collection centers, such as Mitterndorf an der Fischa.
Conclusions
In summary, Vallarsa is a beautiful municipality that offers an authentic experience of Trentino life. If you are looking for a place to immerse yourself in nature, taste local flavors, and discover the history of an area rich in traditions, Vallarsa is the right place for you.
