Valfurva
Welcome to Santa Caterina Valfurva
Hello everyone, today I will talk to you about Santa Caterina Valfurva, a magnificent hamlet in the municipality of Valfurva, located in Valtellina, in the province of Sondrio. If you love snow, good food, and the mountains, this is the perfect place for you.
Territory
Our resort is located in the Stelvio National Park and is only 39 kilometers from Bormio, 115 from Malles Venosta, 60 from Sondrio, and 155 from Milan. Santa Caterina Valfurva is at the end of the Gavia Valley, almost at the beginning of the higher southern part of Valtellina. It is only accessible by car, and in the summer, it can also be reached via the Gavia Pass, which connects Valtellina to Val Camonica, passing through the Gavia Valley.
Climate
Since Santa Caterina Valfurva is located at the bottom of a typical alpine valley, the climate is Alpine. The temperatures in the winter months reach -10 degrees Celsius, while in summer, they reach up to 20-30 degrees Celsius.
Sports
Our resort is a renowned ski resort and offers the opportunity to practice sports both in winter and summer. We are active in alpine and nordic skiing and over the years have hosted numerous important competitions, such as the Alpine Ski World Cup, the Nordic Combined World Cup, the Cross-Country Skiing World Cup, and many other races.
One of our most famous ski runs is the "Deborah Compagnoni," which from 2014 to 2017 was chosen as the host site for the men's downhill race of the Alpine Ski World Cup. We are very proud to host these competitions!
Skyrunning
Since 2015, Santa Caterina Valfurva has hosted a Skyrunning World Series race (Vertical Kilometer - Skyrunner World Series). If you are a lover of mountain running, this race is definitely for you.
The Strong Water
But Santa Caterina is not only about sports and fun, we have a very famous thermal spring called "Strong Water." In 1698, Baldassarre Bellotti identified a water source in a marshy area on red soil. In 1703, he wrote a treatise describing the qualities of the water.
Initially, it was thought to have healing properties against anemia and was therefore called "ferruginous water" or "strong water." In 1836, the first hotel, the Grand Hotel Clementi, was built, which was intended for all those who went to the spring.
In the following years, thermal baths were built, whose pavilion was designed by Carlo Giongo and inaugurated in August 1907. The water was also bottled and sold. Even the doctor Paolo Mantegazza spoke very positively about the qualities of the water.
Conclusions
In short, if you are looking for a location with a complete tourist offer, Santa Caterina Valfurva is definitely for you. We offer a wide range of sports and recreational activities, a wonderful climate, and a unique thermal spring. We are sure you will not be disappointed!
