Monteverde

Welcome to Monteverde

Hello everyone! Today, I will talk to you about Monteverde, a hamlet of the municipality of Valfabbrica, located in the province of Perugia. This small village is situated on the right hillside of the Chiascio valley, at an altitude of 563 meters, and offers a lovely view of the Perugia and the Umbria Valley mountains. According to Istat data from 2001, there are only 51 inhabitants, but the beauty of the place makes it an ideal location for a visit.

The History of Monteverde

Monteverde has an ancient and fascinating history. In 1198, the village was under the civil and ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the city of Assisi, as reported in a document signed by Innocent III. At that time, the village was called Monte Aldone, which could derive from the Lombard language and refers to the slaves made by the Lombards or the Franks. The term "monte verde" instead suggests the liberation from such slavery, and also the presence of extensive oak trees in the vicinity.

In 1232, a census recorded the presence of 27 families among the village residents, including the relatives of Saint Clare of Assisi. In 1266, the castle passed from the hands of Tommasino to those of the inhabitants of the castle of Monteverde, while remaining always subordinate to Assisi. In 1386, during the war with Perugia, Monteverde was urged to remain loyal to the city of Assisi. Until 1730, the village still belonged to the castles of the county of Assisi.

Economy and Events

Monteverde is primarily a rural area and has a strong agricultural economy. However, in recent years, many farmhouses have been renovated and transformed into agriturismi, thus offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the landscape and the village's history. There are also some small events that take place during the year, such as patron saint feasts and fairs, which are particularly interesting for those who want to learn about local traditions.
