Valdobbiadene

Welcome to Valdobbiadene

Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk to you about Valdobbiadene, a town of approximately 9,968 inhabitants located in the province of Treviso, in the Veneto region. Did you know that this territory has a millenary history, dating back to the Stone Age, with archaeological finds that testify to human presence since the Mousterian period?

History

Valdobbiadene has a very special and fascinating history. Its name has undergone multiple changes over the centuries, with the current toponym probably dating back to the fusion of two branches of the Piave river, which pass right through the area. The village has undergone numerous conquests and changes of hands, from the period of the Roman Empire to the Lombard one, up to the Venetian conquest in the 14th century. During this period, the territory went through many struggles and depredations, but still managed to maintain its autonomy thanks to the self-government of the Merighi, men democratically elected among the heads of families. Later, with the arrival of Napoleon and then the Austrian domination, the "Rules" disappeared and the Communes were born, including Valdobbiadene. During the First World War, the territory suffered heavy bombings and had to be evacuated. A tragic event is the massacre of Valdobbiadene that occurred in May of 1945, where about 50 prisoners of war were killed by dissenting factions and partisan deserters.

Symbols

The coat of arms of the municipality of Valdobbiadene, recognized by decree of the head of government of 25 September 1929, shows the figure of the goddess Diana, inspired by a bronze statuette found in Concordia Sagittaria in 1926. This invention of the 20th century represents an important legacy for the territory.

Villages and attractions

Valdobbiadene is a town full of villages and tourist attractions. The village square is dominated by the Palazzo dei Vicari, built between the 14th and 15th centuries. This building houses the Municipal Library, which preserves a rich collection of historical, literary and artistic works. During the summer period, the square comes alive with events, shows and concerts. A must-see is the Parish Church of San Gregorio Magno, dating back to the 17th century. It was rebuilt after being destroyed by a fire, and inside, valuable works of art can be admired. Valdobbiadene is famous especially for its production of Prosecco, a sparkling wine much appreciated both in Italy and abroad. The area produces two types of Prosecco D.O.C.G.: Valdobbiadene and Conegliano Valdobbiadene. A highly anticipated event by the Valdobbiadenesi and tourists is the "Wine Market Exhibition", which takes place every year in April.

Valdobbiadene also boasts a very rich and authentic culinary tradition. Veneto cuisine is often associated with dishes based on fish, but here you can taste dishes based on meat, pasta and local cheeses. One of the most famous dishes is the "Risotto alla Montanara", a delicious specialty based on porcini mushrooms and chestnuts. The territory also offers many varieties of cheeses, including Morlacco del Grappa and Nostrano Valdobbiadene. But the real symbol of Valdobbiadene is obviously Prosecco, which is produced with grapes from all the surrounding area.
