History: Ancient origins and Norman domination

Valdina's history dates back to ancient times, when the current church of San Pancrazio was used as a lookout tower for ships coming from the Aeolian Islands. In Roman times, the first "pagus" was formed in the area of Roccavaldina, while under Norman domination the area was called "Casale del Conte". In 1168, William II granted the casale to the abbess of the Messina monastery of Santa Maria della Scala, while in 1196 Queen Constance confirmed the donation.

Medieval age: The birth of the casali

After the takeover by the Kingdom of Aragon, two fiefs were created in the western part of the demanial territory of Rametta. Two casali were born in the two fiefs, La Rocca and Maurojanni, named after the owners. Shortly thereafter, Maurojanni was handed over to La Rocca, becoming a single casale.

Modern age: The arrival of the Valdina family

In 1509, the fiefs were handed over from the Castagna family to the Valdina family, who arrived from Spain. The Valdina family contributed to the development of the villages for two centuries, until the last descendant of the family, Giovanni Valdina Vignolo, died in 1692 without leaving any heirs. The title passed to the nearest cousin, and the family married into the local bourgeoisie. The fief was owned by the Valdina family until 1812, when feudalism was abolished.

Contemporary age: The merger with other municipalities

In 1929, Valdina and the neighboring municipalities of Spadafora San Martino and Venetico were merged into the new municipality of Spadafora. However, in 1985 Valdina broke away from Spadafora and became an autonomous municipality, returning to its old name.

Conclusions: The beauty of Valdina

In conclusion, Valdina is a municipality with an ancient and fascinating character, with a rich and interesting history. The presence of the sea and the beautiful natural landscape make it an increasingly popular tourist destination.
