Valdastico
The History of A31 Valdastico
The A31 Valdastico highway, also known as "della Val d'Astico", connects the province of Rovigo with those of Padua and Vicenza. The construction of the northern part of the A4 took four years, from 1972 to 1976, and was initially called "Pi-Ru-Bi" by the three Christian Democratic politicians Flaminio Piccoli, Mariano Rumor, and Antonio Bisaglia. In 2002, the Council of Ministers approved the construction of the southern part of the Valdastico, while ANAS definitively approved the project in 2004.
Problems and Solutions
In 2005, the works were halted due to an administrative appeal filed by environmental committees. However, thanks to a popular petition and the intervention of the Council of State, the project was resumed. Over the years, several sections of the A31 Valdastico highway have been opened, the most recent of which in 2015, to protect the Saraceno villa, following another appeal.
Today, the highway has two lanes per direction plus an emergency lane and eleven balcony exits. There are three interconnections with other important roads: the A4 Motorway, the SS 434, and the Pedemontana Veneta.
Conclusions
The A31 Valdastico is an important road artery connecting three Italian provinces. Its construction had its ups and downs, but eventually, the project was completed. Today, the highway is a key communication route and an effective link between various destinations.
