Vacri: between medieval history and rustic beauty.

History

Origins

The Vacri area has a rich archaeological history. In fact, Italic artifacts found in the Porcareccia area, an area for breeding, show that Vacri already had a certain importance in Roman times and there is evidence of a Roman temple dating back to the 3rd century BC. In addition, the site was inhabited by the Italic Samnites in the 6th century BC.

Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, Vacri is mentioned in some chronicles as "Bacri di Teate", "Batro", "Bacrum", "Arovacro". During the Lombard era, Vacri was part of the gastaldato of Teate, which constituted the current province of Chieti, with the administrative headquarters of the judge in Chieti. In the 12th century, the gastaldia was incorporated by the Normans into the County of Loritello owned by Roberto II of Bassavilla, while in the 13th century, it became part of the new Giustizierato d'Abruzzo with Frederick II of Swabia. Subsequently, the town followed the history of the Kingdom of Naples and Chieti.

From the duchy to the contemporary era

In the 17th century, Vacri became the seat of a duchy, although it was actually a puppet state, dependent on the Principality of Chieti. It was ruled by the Valignani marquises, who proclaimed themselves, among the various titles, marquises of Cepagatti, dukes of Vacri and Villanova.

Tourism

Vacri is a small town that attracts visitors thanks to its rustic beauty, ancient churches and historic palaces. The church of San Callisto, also known as the church of Ripacorbaria di Manoppello, was donated to Count Trasmondo in 1056. Other interesting churches are San Biagio, the parish church, San Mane and San Michele, which has disappeared. Vacri's Old Town, dating back to the Middle Ages, is characterized by arches, stairways and lintels. Nature lovers can enjoy a walk in the Fluvial Park of the Foro and Dendalo Rivers, where you can admire the flora and fauna of the area.

Economy

Vacri still maintains a predominantly agricultural and livestock economy today, as in the past, although efforts are being made to expand tourism thanks to the beauty of the town and the surrounding area. In particular, olive oil and wines are among the most successful local products.

How to get to Vacri

To reach Vacri, the best way is through the A14 motorway. From the Pescara Nord exit, follow the directions for Chieti and then for Vacri. The municipality is about 15 km from the center of Pescara and about 30 km from Chieti.

In conclusion, Vacri is a small Abruzzo town that has a lot to offer visitors. Its ancient history, rustic beauty, ancient churches and historic palaces, the nature that surrounds it and the welcoming atmosphere make this location one of the most suggestive places of central Italy.
