Hello friends! Today we are talking about Turin, an Italian municipality with 842,472 inhabitants located in the region of Piedmont. Turin is the fourth largest municipality in Italy by population and is the heart of a metropolitan area of about 1.7 million inhabitants. It is a very important city for the economy and industrial production, considering that together with Milan and Genoa it composed the famous industrial triangle during the years of the Italian Economic Miracle.

The Importance of Turin

Economy-Industrial Production

Turin is not only important for industrial production, but is also one of the major academic, tourist, cultural, artistic, and scientific centers in Italy. The territory of the city includes areas and buildings included in two UNESCO-protected sites: some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of the Savoy Residences in Piedmont and the area of the hills of the Po.

Turin: history, culture, and economy in a global city.

Two-Thousand-Year History

A city with a two-thousand-year history, it was probably founded near the current location around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, and then transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name 'Iulia Augusta Taurinorum' in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogothic dominion, it became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, and then passed under the nominal suzerainty of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563 it became the capital. From 1720 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861) and from 1861 to 1865 it was the first Capital (city) of the Kingdom of Italy.

Important Events

Turin has been the venue for important events such as the International Exposition in 1911, the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006, the ATP Finals from 2021, and the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. In addition, it is the birthplace of some of the most iconic symbols of 'Made in Italy' in the world, including vermouth, Gianduiotti, grissini, and espresso coffee.

Key Sectors

Turin is the hub of the Italian automotive industry, but also an important center for publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, food and wine, space (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence. Its constant growth in international importance has reached the rank of global city (third Italian city after Milan and Rome) in the 'Gamma' category.

The Geography of Turin

Territory

Turin is located in the plain delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po rivers. The Po river crosses the city from south to north, while in front of the city there are some alpine valleys such as Val di Susa, which connects the city with neighboring France through the Frejus tunnels (Railway Tunnel of Frejus and Frejus Road Tunnel), Valli di Lanzo, and Val Sangone.

What can I say, Turin is a fantastic city, rich in history and culture, but also in opportunities for those working in different sectors. I hope I have made you better acquainted with the city. Until the next adventure!
