History

Urago d'Oglio boasts a millenary history, which began with the settlement of the Liguri people eighteen hundred years before Christ. But it was the Gaulish Cenomani, founders of the village, who determined its destiny in the following centuries. During the Roman period, Urago became an important crossroads of commercial exchanges, thanks to its strategic location.

After the invasion of the barbarians, the area came under the control of the bishop of Cremona. In 1366 it became part of the fiefdom of Calciana di Donna Regina della Scala, divided among the Martinengo, Secco, Barbi, and Pallavicini, while the Urago castle was ruled by the Gisalberti, counts of Martinengo. In 1427, the town and the fortress of Urago were occupied by the Visconti army led by Carlo II Malatesta and occupied by his captains, Cristoforo Lavello and Alberico II da Barbiano.

In 1774 it was detached from the Calcio parish to pass to the diocese of Brescia. With the French occupation of the western part of the Calciana fiefdom in 1796, Urago d'Oglio, on March 31 of the following year, became part of the Brescia Republic, putting an end to an independence that had lasted for 431 years. Finally, just south of Urago, it is still possible to find an artificial hill built with the bodies of the three thousand French soldiers who fell in the battle of Chiari.
