Gemini
Discovering Gemini: a gem in the heart of Salento
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a splendid fraction of the province of Lecce: Gemini. With just over 1,600 inhabitants, it is only 2 km away from the municipal capital of Ugento and is a small pearl of Salento that holds historical and cultural treasures.
The history of Gemini: between legends and uncertainties
The origins of the settlement are uncertain, but it is thought to date back to the Roman period. It is believed that the name Gemini derives from the cult that the Romans had for the twin gods Castor and Pollux, protectors of the army and commerce. However, the first time the location appears in official documents is in 1272 with the name Geminianum. During the feudal era, Gemini followed the fortunes of Ugento, with the exception of the period from 1276 to the first half of the 14th century when the hamlet belonged to the bishop of Ugento together with Pompignano. During this time, the bishop built a fortified residence in Gemini.
During the Renaissance, the city of Ugento was razed to the ground in 1537, and part of the population took refuge in Gemini. In the Byzantine era, the town was surrounded by a city wall. In the sixteenth century, Palazzo Macrì, Palazzo Piccino, Palazzo Riso, and the Church of the Madonna di Pompignano were built, while the next century saw the construction of the Church dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi.
Must-see events: the fair of St. Francis of Assisi and the living Nativity scene
If you have the chance to visit Gemini, I recommend planning your trip during the fair of St. Francis of Assisi, which takes place every October 4th. It's a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture and traditions, with stalls, games, and shows.
Additionally, if you are planning a trip during the Christmas season, you can't miss Gemini's living Nativity scene, which runs from December 25th to January 6th. It is the occasion to experience something truly special and walk the streets of the village admiring the reconstructions of ancient crafts and scenes of daily life.
