Uboldo
Welcome to Uboldo, a small municipality in Lombardy
Hello friends, today I will be talking about Uboldo, a small municipality located in the southeastern appendix of the province of Varese, in Lombardy. Uboldo is home to 10,642 inhabitants and has a flat terrain of alluvial origin.
Exploring the geography of Uboldo
The territory of Uboldo is mainly sandy and gravelly in nature and is therefore permeable. A smaller part of the territory is instead clayey, and therefore wet on the surface. Part of the municipality is covered by forests, where the locust trees predominate. The municipality is crossed by the Bozzente, a stream whose course was diverted in 1753 to avoid damage to the village due to frequent floods.
The history of Uboldo
The settlement of Uboldo has an ancient elliptical core and a compact structure, characterized by two squares connected by a main road axis. Located eccentrically in the southeastern area of the municipal territory, at varying distances from the historic center, there are four peripheral districts originated from farms called Girola, Soccorso, Malpaga (all three to the north) and Regosella (to the south). The municipality of Uboldo was reconstituted in 1950, breaking away from Saronno, to which it had been aggregated in 1927.
Archaeology and toponymy of Uboldo
Archaeological finds in the area consist of incinerated burials and various objects attributed to the Celtic-Roman and imperial Roman transition period. Their location, however, is peripheral, near the Soccorso and Malpaga farms, or west of the current town. The toponymy of the municipality cannot be traced back to any Latin root, but can be attributed to the personal name "Ugobaldo" from the Lombard era, or even to "Ud-bald" which in the Germanic language means "possession with fortress".
Lords and powerful families in Uboldo
Uboldo already had its own Consuls in the 12th century, as attested by the documents drafted at that time. The De Crivellis, lords of "districtus", undertook jurisdictional disputes against the consuls of the time and asserted some privileges towards them in 1196. From 1117, Ugo Crivelli, an Uboldese, was appointed consul of Milan.
Conclusion
Here is the history and geography of Uboldo, as well as some details on toponymy and the lords of the time. This municipality offers a variety of landscapes, from woods to plains, and above all a lively community that deserves to be known. If you have the opportunity, do not miss the chance to visit Uboldo.
