Ubiale Clanezzo

A brief introduction to Ubiale Clanezzo

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Ubiale Clanezzo, a town in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy, made up of the villages of Ubiale and Clanezzo, located at the entrance of the Val Brembana. This town has about 1362 inhabitants and has an ancient and interesting history, which has left numerous testimonies on the territory.

The history of Ubiale Clanezzo

The first human presence dates back to the Upper Paleolithic and is evidenced by archaeological finds found in various locations of the municipality. However, the first residential nuclei began to form only during the Roman civilization period, thanks to the presence of communication routes that connected Clanezzo to Lemine, passing through Ubiale and crossing the Brembo river. With the end of the Roman Empire, the territory experienced a period of little anthropization, until the arrival of the Franks who gave rise to feudalism.

Subsequently, the lands of Ubiale Clanezzo were the scene of clashes between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, so much so that numerous castles and fortifications were built. The castle of Clanezzo, owned by the Ghibelline family of Dalmasano, was at the center of the main events that involved the neighboring districts. In the course of the fourteenth century, there were numerous clashes that affected the village, which fought for a long time against the inhabitants of the Imagna valley, aligned with the Guelph faction.

The situation returned to peace from the beginning of the fifteenth century when, together with the rest of the Bergamo province, it was placed under the dominion of the Republic of Venice. The latter enacted several rules to improve the social and economic situation of the territory and created the Priula road, a road that crossed the entire Val Brembana to connect the Orobian capital with the territories of the Canton Grigioni.
